Battalion S-1: Personnel

c/1LT Clauss, Evan

Hello cadets! I am Cadet First Lieutenant Evan Clauss, and I will be the S1 or Personnel Officer for the 2023/2024 School Year. As S1, my duties include filing all cadet paperwork, tracking event participation, deciding on promotion board and decoration criteria, maintaining all cadet records within JUMS (JROTC records database), and taking meeting notes. Every event and field trip we do has a participant list, and one of my primary duties is updating and maintaining that list. My ultimate responsibility for the school year is ensuring all our operations (including events and daily company activities) run smoothly.

In my spare time, I enjoy baseball (Go Padres!!), music (I play bass guitar), disc golf (the most obscure sport ever), gaming (and being awful at it), Lego, aviation, and cars. I love reading, which usually keeps me up at night instead of looking at my phone. Some of my favorite books and series I’ve read over the years are Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

JROTC Career

I started as most cadets start, as a member of a squad in a Company. I applied for Company leadership, and my instructor gave me a squad leader position in which I never had to do much. I always wanted to do more but wasn’t given the chance until I was selected as an S1 assistant for the 22/23 year. I loved my assistant position because it gave me the knowledge of JROTC I needed to succeed in the program. I learned how to do basic S1 tasks, such as filing paperwork and creating spreadsheets before I was named the S1 for the 23/24 year at the end of the 2023 school year.

I am a member of Kearny’s Armed Drill Team, which spins rifles and goes to competitions. I have formed a powerful bond with the other members of ADT, and to most of us, the team is like a family. Ever since I saw ADT perform for the first time two years ago, I knew I wanted to join, but I couldn’t find time until about the middle of last year. It has proven to be one of the best decisions of my JROTC career.

Academics

I started my academic journey at Curie Elementary 11 years ago. After a memorable 4 years, I transferred to John Muir, where I enjoyed my final year of elementary school before enrolling at Innovation Middle. My 6th-grade year was mostly uneventful, and it seemed like 7th grade would be the same before Friday, March 13th, when everything stopped. COVID took a large toll on me since most of my happiness came from my social life. After COVID, I finished my 8th-grade year and then started at Kearny’s School of Engineering, Innovation, and Design.

Awards and Decoration

My ribbons include N-1-3 Academic Achievement (2022), N-1-4 Perfect Attendance (2022), N-1-6 LET Service (earned three times, 2021, 2022, and 2023), N-1-8 Battalion Staff (2023), N-3-2 Personal Appearance (earned two times, 2022 and 2023), N-3-3 Proficiency (2022), N-3-4 Drill Team (2023), N-3-9 Commendation (2022), N-3-10 Good Conduct (2022), N-3-11 JCLC (2023), N-3-14 Outstanding Cadet (2022), N-4-3 Formal Inspection (2023), and N-4-6 Service Learning (2022). I have three medals: Superior Cadet (2023), First Year Academic Achievement (2022), and JCLC Participation (2023).
